Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

THE LOWER EMBODIED CARBON CONSTRUCTION SOLUTION

TRANSPARENT DATA FOR SUSTAINABLE DECISIONS

When you need to make smart decisions about sustainable construction materials for a Green Star, Infrastructure Sustainability, or sustainability-rated project, simply having your manufacturer's word is no longer enough. Instead you need proven data that reflects a verifiable and measurable impact of its usage and lifecycle.

Neumann Steel is committed to transparency in sustainability. That's why we publish Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) through EPD Australasia for our reinforcing bar and mesh products.

Our EPDs provide independently verified, lifecycle impact data developed to internationally recognised standards. For your project team, that means straightforward access to the numbers needed for sustainability reporting, procurement compliance, and rating submissions, without chasing documentation from multiple sources.

A SMARTER WAY TO BUILD SUSTAINABLY

If you're looking to go further and reduce the embodied carbon of the steel itself, SENSE 600® is an excellent choice.

Backed by its own EPD and manufactured in Australia from 100% recycled scrap metal using an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), it offers up to 39% lower embodied carbon compared to standard Grade 500N steel.

SENSE 600® combines higher strength steel with an innovative square profile bar design, which allows projects to use up to 16.7% less raw material without any compromise on structural performance or load capacity. For concreters, builders, and developers working on projects with sustainability targets, it's a practical solution that delivers real, measurable results.

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

REDUCING EMBODIED CARBON WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Australia's construction industry accounts for significant carbon emissions, with growing pressure on projects to demonstrate environmental responsibility. SENSE 600® addresses this challenge by delivering measurable reductions in embodied carbon while maintaining full compliance with Australian Standards. Key benefits include:

This is not a compromise solution. SENSE 600® delivers the same structural performance you rely on, with the added benefit of significantly reduced environmental impact. For projects pursuing green building certifications or seeking to reduce Scope 3 emissions, SENSE 600® provides a practical pathway forward.

DESIGNED FOR AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS AND EASE OF USE

One of the most significant advantages of SENSE 600® is its compatibility with existing design processes and compliance frameworks. Engineers, designers, and builders can specify SENSE 600® without disrupting workflows or requiring extensive redesign.

COMPLIANCE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Designs to AS 3600 (Concrete Structures).
  • Manufactured to AS/NZS 4671 (Steel Reinforcing Materials).
  • JAS-ANZ third party accredited for quality assurance.
  • Compliant with National Construction Code (NCC) when designed to Australian Standards.
  • CodeMark certified for specific applications, enabling straightforward substitution.
  • Ductility Class N, meeting the same standards as 500N bar.

TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE

SENSE 600® reinforcing bar features a unique square profile distinguished by four longitudinal ribs and a square core. This innovative design is integral to the bar's ability to use less material while maintaining load capacity. Rolled-in marks indicate Grade and Ductility Class, Mill identifier, and SENSE 600® designation for easy identification on site.

SUBSTITUTION MADE SIMPLE

SENSE 600® is available in bar diameters that have the Equivalent Load Capacity to standard 500N bars, making specification straightforward. This allows designers to substitute SENSE 600® for 500N longitudinal bars and fitments in accordance with provided substitution tables, maintaining design intent while reducing embodied carbon.

WHERE CAN YOU USE SENSE 600®?

ACROSS RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL AND INFRASTRUCTURE

SENSE 600® can be used in all reinforced concrete elements designed to comply with AS 3600. Common applications include:

  • High-rise buildings and apartment developments.
  • Bridges and infrastructure projects.
  • Warehouses and industrial facilities.
  • Car parks and commercial structures.
  • Residential foundations and concrete elements.

IN WELDING AND FABRICATION

SENSE 600® can be welded per AS/NZS 1554.3, following the same procedures as 500N material. A welding guide for SENSE 600® has been co-produced with Weld Australia, providing clear guidance for fabricators and site teams. Couplers are also available for mechanical splicing applications.

For fabrication, cutting, bending, and placement all follow standard procedures. No new machinery or specialised equipment is required, and site teams can work with SENSE 600® using the same methods they apply to a conventional 500N reinforcing bar. This compatibility ensures that adopting a lower embodied carbon solution does not create additional complexity or delays on site.
